Edward Y. Woo Named Head of MedStar Regional Vascular Surgery Program

Washington, D.C., March 3, 2014 – Renowned vascular surgeon, Edward Y. Woo, MD, FACS, has been named director of the MedStar Regional Vascular Surgery Program, headquartered at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. In his new role, Dr. Woo will expand the Hospital Center’s vascular surgery program and extend it into MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center and MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. An accomplished surgeon and researcher, Dr. Woo is widely recognized for expertise in complex, minimally invasive endovascular procedures. Such procedures allow surgeons to reach many parts of the body through major blood vessels to treat such disorders as aneurysms and artery blockages. Dr. Woo has conducted extensive research in both open surgical and endovascular approaches to vascular disease, and currently serves as the principal investigator for 14 clinical trials. MedStar Washington Hospital Center already has longstanding experience and expertise in treating vascular disorders, performing some of the most complex vascular procedures in the mid-Atlantic region. With Dr. Woo at the helm, the vascular program will be expanded regionally through new collaborations and create new opportunities for research and education. Dr. Woo comes to the Hospital Center from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he served as vice chief and program director for the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, and director of the Vascular Laboratory. Dr. Woo spent more than two decades at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his undergraduate and medical degrees, and completed his internship and residency in general surgery, a research fellowship, and a vascular surgery fellowship. Dr. Woo has a lengthy list of journal articles, invited lectureships and editorial positions to his credit. He was named one of Philadelphia Magazine’s “Top Doctors” for the last five consecutive years, and was listed for the last two years in U.S.News & World Report as one of “America’s Top Doctors.”
